Coding Anti-LGBTQ Fundamentalist Pastoral Care Interventions
Identifying the Culture Behind Reparative and Conversion Therapy
Here’s a paper I presented at the 2024 Association for Humanist Sociology Annual Meeting.
And here’s the abstract: SOGICE (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Change Efforts) like conversion therapy is harmful. However, a limiting factor — and opportunity — appear throughout research: SOGICE is more than just extreme and overt practices like conversion therapy. “Change Efforts” is a fairly broad term. So, what’s missing is first, 1) the ability to have identification criteria for things that are not extreme or abusive interventions; 2) the ability to code, rank, and rate the differences between less explicit and more explicit SOGICE; and 3) the ability to measure the outcomes of covert and less explicit SOGICE. This paper seeks something more achievable — to seek to identify the “culture” from which SOGICE is carried out from. Further, this paper is only speaking to one particular culture of SOGICE emergence: "Fundamentalist Pastoral Care."
